Hendrix’s active career as a performer lasted only four years, beginning in his late ’60s, before his death from an overdose in 1970 at the age of 27.

In that brief period, the rock guitarist, singer and songwriter became one of the most successful and influential musicians of his time, fusing rock, soul, blues and jazz into intricate ballads that changed popular music.

The unconventional guitarist and charismatic performer was discovered in a small club in New York before traveling to England in 1966, where he quickly made a name for himself.

Later that year, his band the Jimi Hendrix Experience released the hit song “Hey Joe”, followed by an influential debut album the following year.

On the recommendation of Paul McCartney, the Seattle-born musician gave a sensational performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival in California in the summer of 1967.
