(CNN)- Lyle and Eric Menendez weren’t happy with a recent Netflix project about their lives, but another title on the streaming service is giving them a chance to have their say.

In a new documentary, “The Menendez Brothers,” both men talk in extensive interviews about what led up to the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, inside the family mansion in Beverly Hills.

Public interest in the Menendez case was recently rekindled by Ryan Murphy’s Netflix dramatic adaptation of the murders, “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Eric Menendez,” which the brothers have described as “blatant lies.”

Prosecutors in Los Angeles announced last week that they were reviewing new evidence presented in his case ahead of a hearing next month.

This is what the new documentary reveals:

Eric, now 53, and Lyle, 56, who are serving decades in prison for the murders, gave the interview to director Alejandro Hartman.

The recorded calls from jail tell their story in their own words.

His brother said, “Lyle was the only person who protected me.”

Both have said that they were driven to murder their parents after years of alleged sexual abuse by their father, which they claim their mother knew about.

Social media has helped a new generation uncover the case and now there is a movement to secure his release.

TikTok, in particular, has been a popular platform for reviewing feedback and evidence.

“The only reason we’re doing this special is because of the movement on TikTok,” says Pamela Bozanich, the prosecutor of the first case in the documentary.

The siblings have also received support from celebrities like Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Kardashian.

The new documentary also offers a glimpse into what life behind bars has been like for the brothers.

Initially, the couple struggled to serve their sentences together in the same facility. According to Lyle Menendez, it was “extremely painful” when this did not happen.

They met in 2018 when Lyle was transferred to the prison in San Diego, California, where Eric Menendez was being held. Now they communicate daily.

“The Menendez Brothers” is available on Netflix.
