The Brazilian justice system on Tuesday ordered the lifting of the embargo on X’s bank accounts and assets in Brazil after the platform agreed to pay more than $5 million in fines.

The ruling by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes paves the way for the reactivation of tycoon Elon Musk’s social network in Brazil, which has been suspended since August 31 for misinformation.

In the new decision, Moraes asked the Central Bank of Brazil to “unblock” X’s bank accounts and financial assets so that he can “receive international transfers” and “immediately pay the prescribed fines.”

The company’s finances were blocked by a court order in Brazil in late August before the platform was available in the country.

Without a legal representative in the country

Access to the old Twitter was banned in Latin America’s most populous country for refusing to appoint a legal representative in Brazil and to remove accounts it accused of spreading false information.

But on September 18, the social network became widely available again in Brazil, thanks to a technical maneuver that allowed it to bypass the block, only to stop working again the next day.

Since then, the company has begun fulfilling Moraes’ requests to return to operations. Moraes and Musk are fighting over limits on free speech.

After X’s suspension, Musk accused the judge of being an “evil dictator.” Moraes, for his part, accused the platform of allowing the spread of information that threatens the democratic system.
