Sharif accused India of “expanding its military capabilities on a massive scale”, threatening to cross the Line of Control (LoC) to seize Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Pakistan Prime Minister said India should withdraw the decision to abrogate Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. He also accused India of trying to subjugate its Muslim population and destroy Islamic heritage. Pakistan also raises the Kashmir issue in its annual address to the United Nations. India is expected to use the right of reply to protest Sharif’s allegations.

Jammu and Kashmir compared to Palestine

Prime Minister Sharif said that like the people of Palestine, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have long been fighting for their freedom and right to self-determination. Referring to India’s decision to revoke most provisions of Article 370, Sharif said that to ensure lasting peace, “India will have to reverse the unilateral and illegal steps it took in August 2019 and respect UN security resolutions and the rights of the Kashmiri people.” “As per the wishes, talks should begin for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue.

Sharif gave a 20-minute speech

In his speech, which lasted about 20 minutes, Shehbaz Sharif claimed that instead of moving towards peace, India had reneged on its commitments to implement Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir. “These proposals call for holding a referendum to enable the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their fundamental right to self-determination,” he said.

The Pakistani Prime Minister said in his speech before the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly: “What is most disturbing is that it is undertaking a massive expansion of its military capabilities, which is mainly directed against Pakistan.” It is clear that Pakistan will respond decisively to any Indian aggression.” Shehbaz Sharif also referred to the situation in Gaza, Ukraine and Afghanistan.
