The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterresurged this Sunday, at the opening of COP16, the governments of the world to move from words to actions because the world is not doing well in the management and conservation of biodiversity.
“The Global Biodiversity Framework is promising to re-establish a relationship with the Earth and its environment. But we are not on the right track. Our task at this COP is to move from words to action,” Guterres said in a video that was shown at the Biodiversity COP16 opening ceremony in the Colombian city of Cali.
Guterres stressed that in order for people to thrive, the environment must thrive “Destroying the environment causes conflict, anger and disease, increases poverty, inequality and weather problemand destroy sustainable development, green jobs, culture and GDP (Gross Domestic Product).”
In that sense, he proved it a decline in natural services, such as pollination and clean water“it would mean a loss of billions of dollars a year to the global economy, with the poorest affected the most.”
Guterres recalled that the Global Biodiversity Framework promises to restore the relationship with the Earth and its natural resources and that this means nothing more than the existing and developing countries. “a clear plan that aligns national actions with all of the Framework’s goals” of Kunming-Montreal, approved at COP15.

The UN Secretary General also said that countries must fulfill their economic commitments and accelerate aid to developing countries, which means that Cali must be left “and. major investment in the Global Biodiversity Fund and a commitment to promoting alternative public and private funding sources for the implementation of the project.
On the other hand, he emphasized that those who benefit from nature should support for protection and recovery and they must also help developing countries that are being “spoiled.”
The two issues that will be discussed at COP16, whose negotiations will take place from tomorrow until November 1, are how money protection of diversity of life and equal compensation for the use of scientific natural resources.

Guterres also called for the COP16 in Cali to implement the work agreed to ensure that Countries share genetic information, share benefits equally.
“It should affect all people like the people’s COP, and it should strengthening the role of indigenous peoples and local communities”he showed.
Finally, he reviewed the work of indigenous people as custodians of biodiversity and it was affirmed that “its knowledge and preservation should be at the core of biodiversity in all societies.”
