Tamil Nadu saw a massive reshuffle on Saturday as MK Stalin handed over the duties of Deputy CM to his son Udayanidhi Stalin. But if we look at the politics of Tamil Nadu, a similar incident happened on 29th May 2009 when the present CM MK Stalin was promoted as Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by his father Late Karunanidhi. Now Stalin, continuing this ‘tradition’, appointed his son Udayanidhi Stalin as Deputy Chief Minister in the government. This decision by Stalin confirms the plan to announce a successor in the DMK.

However, when MK Stalin became Deputy Chief Minister, he was already a four-time MLA, Mayor of Chennai and had been in active politics for over three decades. But Udayanidhi’s political journey is like a T20 game. He became an MLA for the first time in 2021 and entered the cabinet as the Sports Minister within 19 months. In fact, this is Udayanidhi’s fourth political promotion in the last five years.

It is worth noting that for a long time, Udayanidhi seemed to be playing the role of number-2. He often initiated programs on behalf of his father. Udayanidhi’s promotion is also important from the youth image point of view as BJP also has leaders like Anamalai in the state and superstar Vijay is also gearing up for an election innings in 2026.

Will DMK workers accept this legacy?

In fact, Udayanidhi proved himself in the election campaign of 2021 and 2024. His election speeches are conversational in style, suggesting that he will play the role of a star campaigner in the 2026 assembly elections.
