Nuclear Submarine: In view of increasing Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), India has taken steps to strengthen submarine deterrence. The Indian Government’s CCS, namely the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister, has given permission to build two indigenous nuclear submarines. This will enhance the strategic and offensive capabilities of the Indian Navy. With the construction of this submarine, the strength of the Indonesian Navy will increase in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea regions. This also shows that India prioritizes submarines over third-class aircraft carrier warships.

China’s presence at sea is increasing

The submarine will be built at the Shipbuilding Center in Visakhapatnam. Up to 95 percent of the submarine will be indigenous. This submarine will be different from the Arihant class. It will be built under the Advanced Technology Vessel Project. This step was taken by India at a time when 7-8 Chinese naval warships and 3-4 paramilitary vessels are sighted every month in the Indian Ocean Region and the number is likely to increase in the future. Currently, the Chinese surveillance ship ‘Xiang Yang Hong 3’ has been spotted off the coast of Chennai and the ballistic missile tracer ‘Yuan Wang 7’ has been spotted off the coast of Mauritius.

The strength of the Indian Navy will increase

Due to China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean region, national security concerns have favored nuclear submarines to deter and monitor PLA activities, especially in the southern Indian Ocean. Currently two submarines will be built, after which four more submarines can be built. In fact, India has recently commissioned its second SSBN, namely the nuclear submarine INS Arighat. Within the next year, the Indian Navy will get various types of warships and submarines. These warships include frigates, corvettes, destroyers, submarines and survey ships. With their inclusion in the Indonesian Navy, the level of security in the Indian Ocean Region will increase.

Why are nuclear submarines needed?

Nuclear-powered attack submarines can stay underwater for long periods of time. China already has 6 Shang class nuclear submarines. The Akula class nuclear submarine from Russia for India has been postponed until 2028. The Indonesian Navy needs the submarine to improve surveillance in the Indian Ocean region. It is also important to understand that diesel-electric submarines must surface at least once a day to charge their batteries. Nowadays diesel-electric submarines can be attacked. Additionally, diesel submarines are vulnerable to air attacks. Diesel submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion can stay underwater for long periods, but they have to compromise on their on-board weaponry and speed.

India is the sixth nuclear triad country in the world

Arighat is capable of carrying out underwater missile attacks as tested by Arihant on October 14 2022. Then the K-15 SLBM was successfully tested from Arihant. With this, India becomes the sixth nuclear triad country in the world apart from America, Russia, England, France and China.
