We tested Google TV Streamer: Say goodbye to Chromecast

Everyone knows what Google Chromecast is, Google TV on any television with an HDMI port. This concept evolved over time until we reached the Google TV Streamer, Google’s most advanced 4K resolution device for television.

The Google TV Streamer comes with a controller, slightly larger than the previous ones, because another row of buttons has been included, and a USB-C charger. It doesn’t include any kind of HDMI cable or adapter like the rest of the Chromecasts, so you’ll have to buy it separately.

The device is the largest to date, three times larger than traditional Chromecasts. On the back, we find a USB-C port for charging, an Ethernet port for more stable connections and an HDMI 2.1 port for connecting to a television. This port is not that common, and we only find it on modern televisions, so very old devices are excluded. It also acts as a smart hub with support for Mater and Thread technology, making it easy to integrate with smart bulbs, plugs and other compatible devices.

The new Google TV offers a very intuitive and fluid interface. The “For You” tab becomes the nerve center for personalized recommendations based on your viewing habits, which now includes sports. You can also create individual profiles for each family member for a personalized experience tailored to each individual’s interests. Although we already have a television with Google TV, we are already used to its interface.

Room mode with AI

Another strong point we like best is the AI-powered Ambient Mode, which suits our tastes when we want to leave the television on as “background”.

The remote control has been redesigned with a customizable button that lets you create shortcuts to your favorite applications. Voice search by Google Assistant remains the star and the easiest way to find content, control home devices and make quick queries without leaving the couch.

But perhaps what we love most is that Google TV Streamer now has a button to search for all those who’ve lost their remote in bed several times a month.

One of Google TV Streamer’s most impressive features, and well worth the price, is its integration with more than 800 free TV channels, including services like Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex. With the “Google TV Freeplay” feature, you don’t need to install any additional apps or subscribe to a premium service, you just turn on the device and have access to a wide variety of live content.
