Colombo: The situation has become disastrous due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka. Schools in the capital, Colombo, and its suburbs announced their closure on Monday due to floods. According to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre, heavy rains over the weekend caused devastation in many parts of the country. Water is visible everywhere in homes, fields and roads. Three people drowned in the flood, while about 100,000 people were affected.

The army deployed

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center said that 240 homes were damaged by rain and floods. About seven thousand people were evacuated safely. The authorities cut off electricity supplies to some areas as a precaution. Military personnel, including the Navy, were deployed to rescue the victims and provide food and other essential items.

The water reached the roofs of houses and shops

Local TV channels showed flooding in suburban areas of Colombo. In some areas, the water reached the roofs of houses and shops. The situation in Sri Lanka is bad due to the monsoon rains that have been falling since May. In June, 16 people died due to floods and landslides.

Such a scene was seen in 2021 as well

This is not the first time that Sri Lanka has witnessed severe floods. Earlier in 2021 too, heavy rains caused a similar disaster here. Then floods hit the homes of many people. More than five thousand people were displaced. Even then, the flood caused a lot of destruction. (AP)
