Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Laos: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced a 10-point plan to strengthen the comprehensive partnership between India and ASEAN and said relations with the regional group are vital to guiding Asia’s future. Addressing the 21st India-ASEAN Summit, Prime Minister Modi said trade between India and ASEAN has doubled to over $130 billion in the last decade.
“The 21st century belongs to Asia”
“I believe that the 21st century – the Asian century – is the century of India and ASEAN countries,” Prime Minister Modi said in his address to Asean leaders. ASEAN countries include Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos and Singapore.

Prime Minister Modi said that India is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ‘Act East’ policy which has given new energy, direction and momentum to the historic relations between India and ASEAN countries. In a post on the website, “We look forward to deepening cooperation in technology, communication and other such areas.”

Prime Minister Modi also announced a 10-point plan to strengthen India-ASEAN relations. The 10-point plan to strengthen India-ASEAN partnership includes celebrating 2025 as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, doubling the number of scholarships at Nalanda University and offering new scholarships to ASEAN students in agricultural universities in India.

- Celebrating 2025 as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, India will provide $5 million for joint activities.
- Celebrate a decade of Move East with a range of people-centred activities including Youth Summit, Startup Festival, Hackathon, Music Festival, ASEAN-India Think Tank Network and Delhi Dialogue.
- Organizing the ASEAN-India Women Scientists Conference under the ASEAN-India Science and Technology Development Fund.
- Double the number of scholarships at Nalanda University. To provide new scholarships to ASEAN students in agricultural universities in India.
- Review the ASEAN-India Goods Trade Agreement by 2025.
- Strengthening disaster resilience, for which India will provide $5 million.
- Launching a new path for health ministers towards building health resilience.
- Establish a regular system of cyber policy dialogue between ASEAN and India in order to enhance digital and cyber resilience
- Organizing a workshop on green hydrogen.
- Calling on ASEAN leaders to join the “Planting Trees for Mothers” campaign to address climate change.
