Meloni Announces Upcoming Changes in the Composition of the New European Commission

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has indicated that there will soon be updates on the composition of the new European Commission, particularly regarding the role of Raffaele Fitto. Speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum, Meloni emphasized Italy’s strong position within the European Union while reaffirming her government’s pro-European stance. Despite prior opposition to Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election as President of the European Commission, Meloni remains optimistic about Italy securing a key position for Fitto in the new EU executive body.

Meloni’s European Vision and Italy’s Role

During her speech, Meloni highlighted the positive working relationship she has maintained with Von der Leyen since assuming office nearly two years ago. She stressed that Italy expects to be assigned an important role in the upcoming reshuffle of the European Commission. Fitto, currently Italy’s Minister for European Affairs and a leading member of Fratelli d’Italia, is a top contender for a major portfolio in the new Commission.

Meloni is particularly hopeful that Fitto could be appointed as Executive Vice President for Economic Affairs, a role that would allow Italy to play a significant part in shaping the EU’s economic policies. The Prime Minister affirmed, “I see no reason why Italy shouldn’t receive what it deserves,” emphasizing that the announcement of Italy’s new portfolio is expected next week.

Advocating for EU Reforms

Meloni also used the platform to outline her vision for a reformed European Union. She praised the EU for taking steps towards policies championed by her party, including increased military spending and strengthening Europe’s defense industry. However, she also expressed frustration with the EU’s current economic governance, particularly with the recent reforms to the Stability and Growth Pact and environmental strategies such as the Green Deal. Meloni called for greater consistency in EU policymaking, underscoring the need for a balance between security and sustainability.

Meeting with President Zelensky and Supporting Ukraine

In addition to her focus on EU matters, Meloni reiterated her support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also spoke at the Ambrosetti Forum, Meloni emphasized that abandoning Ukraine would have dire consequences, both economically and geopolitically. “We must not give up on Ukraine,” she stated, firmly rejecting the notion that Russia is winning the war. Meloni argued that Western support, including military aid, has helped create a stalemate in the conflict and that discussions on achieving peace should be the next priority.

Meloni revealed that a new peace conference will be held soon, with Zelensky expressing openness to Russia’s involvement in negotiations—a notable change from the previous conference held in Switzerland, where Russia was not invited.
