(CNN Español) – Nicaragua’s Vice President Rosario Murillo announced this Friday that his country is severing diplomatic ties with Israel over the war on Gaza.
This Friday, Murillo pointed out that the United National Assembly held a special session with the Palestinian people, where the parliament urged the government to evaluate the move, which President Daniel Ortega instructed the Foreign Ministry to follow.
Murillo said his government’s “denial” was not against the people of Israel, but against his government.
On January 23, Ortega and Murillo’s government asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to take part in the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel in December. Israel has rejected the process, arguing that the war against Hamas in Gaza is self-defense, that it is not fighting Palestinians, and that government leaders have not expressed genocidal intent.
CNN sought comment from the Israeli Embassy in Nicaragua, but has not yet received a response.
