Nuclear submarines: In light of China’s increasing activities in the Indian Ocean region, India has taken steps towards strengthening its submarine deterrence. The Government of India’s Carbon Capture and Storage Committee, the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister, has given permission to build two indigenous nuclear submarines. This will increase the strategic and offensive capability of the Indian Navy. With the construction of these submarines, the Navy’s power will increase further in the Indian Ocean region and the South China Sea. This also indicates that India has prioritized submarines rather than a third aircraft carrier.
China’s presence at sea has increased
The submarines will be built at the Visakhapatnam Shipbuilding Centre. The submarines will be up to 95 percent locally manufactured. These submarines will be different from the Arihant class. It will be built within the framework of the Advanced Technology Ship project. India has taken this step at a time when 7-8 Chinese naval warships and 3-4 paramilitary vessels can be seen every month in the Indian Ocean region and their number is likely to increase further in the future. At present, the Chinese surveillance ship “Xiangyanghong 3” has been spotted off the coast of Chennai, and the ballistic missile tracking ship “Yuan Wang 7” has also been spotted off the coast of Mauritius.

The strength of the Indian Navy will increase
Given China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean region, national security concerns have chosen nuclear submarines to deter and monitor PLA activities, especially in the southern Indian Ocean. Two submarines will now be built, after which four more submarines could be built. Whereas, India recently commissioned its second SSBN, i.e. the nuclear submarine INS Arigat. Over the next year, the Indian Navy will acquire many different types of warships and submarines. These warships include frigates, cruisers, destroyers, submarines and survey ships. With their inclusion in the Navy, the level of security in the Indian Ocean region will increase.
Why is there a need for a nuclear submarine?
A nuclear-powered attack submarine can remain underwater for a long time. China already possesses 6 Shang-class nuclear submarines. The Akula-class nuclear submarine from Russia to India has been delayed until 2028. The Navy needs these submarines for increased surveillance in the Indian Ocean region. It is also important to understand that diesel-electric submarines must surface at least once a day to charge the batteries. During this time the diesel-electric submarine would have been attacked. Apart from this, diesel submarines are vulnerable to air attacks. Diesel submarines equipped with an air-independent propulsion system can remain underwater for long periods, but these submarines must compromise on-board weapons as well as speed.

India has become the sixth nuclear triad country in the world
“Arigat” is capable of carrying out undersea missile attacks in the same way as was tested by “Arihant” on October 14, 2022. Then the K-15 SLBM was successfully tested from Arihant. Thus, India has become the sixth nuclear triad country in the world after America, Russia, Britain, France, and China.
