The border between North Korea and South Korea
Seoul: South Korea said Monday it had received indications that North Korea was preparing to destroy northern sections of inter-Korean roads that were no longer in use. Tension between the two countries also increased after South Korea claimed that it had sent drones into North Korean areas. This measure to destroy roads between the two Koreas would be in line with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s efforts to sever ties with South Korea and officially declare it the main enemy of his country.

The South Korean military announced Monday that it is monitoring various activities in North Korea that appear to be preparations for road destruction. “They have covered the road and are working behind that cover,” said Lee Sung-joon, spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. He said demolition measures could be taken on Monday. Lee said the South Korean military believes North Korea may also try to launch a space rocket, which is considered a test banned by the United Nations under long-range missile technology.

This development comes at a time when North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones into its territory three times this month. He threatened that if such an incident happens again, he will take strict action. The North Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement on Sunday that the military had ordered the armed forces and other military units deployed near the border with South Korea to be “fully prepared to fire.” South Korea warned that it would severely punish North Korea if the safety of its citizens was threatened.
