Composed of 40 members, the ‘Olympics4All’ Cerveira-Tomiño team is participating in the 8th edition of the Senior Olympics, held at Parque das Caldas, Monção, and running until this Wednesday. The competition brings together about 400 senior athletes from across the Minho region and its municipalities, including delegations from Salvaterra do Minho, Fornos de Algodres, APPACDM of Viana do Castelo, and Monção. The event is viewed as a platform for shared sporting and social experiences, with a strong emphasis on the benefits of physical activity for health and well-being.
This Sunday, the event kicked off with an opening ceremony attended by all teams and local authorities, creating an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie.
Representing Vila Nova de Cerveira, Sports Councilor Carla Segadães highlighted how the project raises awareness for vulnerable groups about the importance of daily, monitored, and free physical activity, stressing its positive effects on both physical and mental fitness. She wished the Cerveira-Tomiño team good luck and encouraged them to maintain the same energy, dedication, and commitment they’ve shown throughout the year during their weekly training sessions.
Over the three days of competition, teams will take part in a variety of activities, including traditional games like pétanque and ring toss, as well as basketball, volleyball, football, badminton, swimming, and athletics. The event will conclude this Wednesday with a celebratory dinner, where individual awards and the team trophy will be presented. Additionally, the host municipality for the 9th edition of ‘Olympics4All’ in 2025 will be announced.
It’s worth noting that the ‘Olympics4All’ – Intergenerational Olympics project was launched in 2015 by the Vila Nova de Cerveira Municipality, in partnership with the School of Sports and Leisure of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC). The initiative has successfully engaged several municipalities in Alto Minho and continues to foster inter-municipal cooperation. Moreover, the project is now being replicated at the European level in countries like Bulgaria, Italy, Hungary, and Spain, under the name ‘In Common Sports.’
